As first reported on the That Network blog at Jerm.com, the CompTIA Network+ exam is getting a facelift.
The CompTIA Network+ certification has seen several changes over the last decade of its existence. The last revision was 2005 (with several minor updates in 2007), but CompTIA is currently preparing a major revision of the exam: the CompTIA Network+ 2008 certification. This revision will update the exam to include newer technologies and best practices, and will reorganize the exam and create added focus on Security. With new information about wireless and newer networking technologies including, the Network+ exam will test your current knowledge.
The CompTIA Network+ 2005 exam had four major domains:
- Media and Topologies (20%)
- Protocols and Standards (20%)
- Network Implementation (25%)
- Network Support (35%)
CompTIA is expanding these domains to a total of six domains with the 2008 release (final specs not yet released):
- Network Technologies
- Network Media and Topologies
- Network Devices
- Network Management
- Network Tools
- Network Security
One of the benefits we see for individuals pursuing the 2008 version of the Network+ is the enhanced focus on the hands-on aspect of network troubleshooting. By breaking out Network Tools and Network Security, CompTIA chose to increase focus and exposure on these two critical areas.
As with the 2005 version of the certification, the 2008 Network+ certification is for networking technicians with 9-12 months of experience who have achieved an A+ certification. Those individuals who ...

The CompTIA Server+ exam is a popular option for server administrators to demonstrate their skills. Last updated in 2005, the CompTIA Server+ exam is designed for server administrators with 18-24 months of experience.
CompTIA is going through a series of updates to their exams, with the Security+ being the next update, then the Network+, and finally, as CertificationWatch recently learned, the Server+ exam.
No release date has been set for the new Server+ exam, but based on the timeline of other exam updates, we do not expect it to be released until 2009.
CompTIA is currently collecting names of subject matter experts (SMEs) to review and rewrite the exam objectives. After the rewrite period is over, CompTIA will survey industry leaders and more SMEs to determine if the composition of the Server+ 2009 objectives adequately addresses the skillset of a server administrator with 18-24 months experience. Simultaneously, CompTIA will engage SMEs to write questions and answers for the exam. Once these processes are over, CompTIA will begin alpha testing the exam, then a public beta testing process will be undertaken. Finally, the exam will be released to start officially certifying individuals.
We expect the new exam will include more experiential questions and test newer technologies released since the last update. We expect the Server+ 2009 to be released mid-2009.
As with the other CompTIA certifications, current certified Network+ administrators do not need to retake the exam to retain their credentials.
